Institutional Knowledge

How to consume the city's cultural output without paying full price or standing behind tour groups.

Museum "Suggested" Admissions

Historically, the Met operated on a "pay-as-you-wish" model. This ended for tourists, but New York State residents and NY/NJ/CT students can still pay whatever they want at the door with valid ID. The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has a similar policy for residents.

Gallery Hopping in Chelsea

The blue-chip galleries in Chelsea (Gagosian, David Zwirner, Pace) are free and open to the public, generally Tuesday through Saturday. The art displayed is museum-quality, the crowds are thinner, and Thursday evenings often feature opening receptions with free wine.

Lincoln Center / TKTS

While the Times Square TKTS booth is famous, the Lincoln Center TKTS booth (in the David Rubenstein Atrium) is indoors, has vastly shorter lines, and sells the exact same Broadway discount tickets, plus discounts for Lincoln Center performances.
