The NYC Resident Tax Burden

Living in the five boroughs comes with a specific, highly visible premium on your paycheck.

If you live in New York City for more than 184 days a year, you are subject to the NYC Local Income Tax. This is paid in addition to Federal and New York State taxes. It is the price of admission.

The Brackets

Unlike flat local taxes in some jurisdictions, NYC has a progressive tax bracket system ranging from 3.078% to 3.876%. However, because the top bracket kicks in at a relatively low $50,000 for single filers, almost all working professionals in the city pay near the top rate on the majority of their income.

The "Commuter Tax" Myth

People who live in New Jersey, Connecticut, or Westchester but work in NYC pay New York State income tax, but they do not pay the NYC Local Income Tax. (A commuter tax existed decades ago but was repealed). This ~3.8% savings is a primary driver for people moving to the suburbs once they have children.

W-4 Setup

When you start a job, ensure your IT-2104 (the NY state equivalent of a W-4) clearly indicates you are a NYC resident. If your employer fails to withhold it, you will face a massive tax bill and underpayment penalties in April.
