OMNY and Fare Capping

The MetroCard is being retired. OMNY (One Metro New York) is the contactless payment system using your phone or tap-to-pay card. Crucially, OMNY implements fare capping: after you pay for 12 rides ($34.80) in a 7-day period starting Monday, the rest of your rides that week are free. You must use the exact same card/device for every tap for this to work.

The Micro-Mobility Layer: CitiBike

CitiBike is the largest bike-share program in the US. The introduction of white e-bikes has fundamentally altered how New Yorkers commute cross-town (where subways are historically weak). The pricing structure punishes casual e-bike users but heavily rewards annual members.

NYC Ferry

At $4.00 a ride (no free transfers to the MTA), the NYC Ferry is heavily subsidized but offers a vastly superior commute for those living near the waterfronts of Brooklyn and Queens (e.g., Astoria, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bay Ridge). It includes a bar serving beer and coffee.

Subway Rules of Etiquette

Take your backpack off and put it between your legs.
Let people off before you get on.
Do not stop at the top or bottom of the stairs.
If an empty car pulls up on a crowded train, do not enter it. There is a reason it is empty (AC broken, bodily fluids).
